Sustainable gains for grower at 140m
Peter Bennett is an unassuming, modest guy, but he is also a switched on grower. How else to explain the impressive improvements in his production over the last four years?
“We made week 16 on the 10ha home block again, which is at 90m altitude. But up here we were delighted to make week 15 again this season as well, and get another gain in yield” says Peter. “Industry people are surprised when they hear that we make Kiwistart on this block, at an altitude of 140m up No 4 Road.”
A regular Wormtech Liquid user for three seasons, Peter’s is an impressive result, particularly when you see that his 2.7ha orchard faces south, and suffers from some cold winds. He and son Scott manage the canopy and have undertaken major vine development in recent years. He uses both cane and trunk girdling, as well as a high inputs of fertiliser and sprays.
“We put a lot into the orchard, but I believe it is the Wormtech Liquid in particular that gets me into Kiwistart” says Peter. “We put it on religiously throughout the season, and I think the improved soil and plant health give me bigger fruit sooner.”
Greg Walker is reluctant to take all the credit. “Peter is an innovative and skilled grower, and it is no surprise that he does well. For example I am sure that girdling is a major contributor to his result. We see Peter as a great inspiration for growers who are not in the best locations, as the profit gains from good management can be just as worthwhile there.”
